Chair for Digital Additive Production DAP of the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University is closely collaborating with Fraunhofer ILT and Chair for Laser Technology and mainly focusing in the area of Additive Manufacturing. The institute aims to extend the knowledge in this topic and to play a strong role in the market at an international level. Therefore, hot topics such as Topology Optimization and Lattice Structures are of great interest to the institute. The institute is working on industrial and publicly-funded projects in various areas such as automotive industry, aerospace, turbomachinery, medical technology and tool and mold making. A very good working atmosphere is offered by the institute in which you can find people with a strong background in processing, design and simulation of AM-produced parts and process itself. Therefore, it is a right place to gain good work experience by interacting directly with the people in the institute.
We are developing a software package for the finite element analysis. This package includes three parts: pre-processing, solver, and post-processing. This work focuses on the solver part. The goal is to get an input of mesh in the form of nodal and connectivity information plus the loading and boundary conditions in the form of nodal force or displacement and solve the quasi-static problem using Newton method. All the theoretical background will be provided. An efficient algorithm will be designed together with the student, and it will be implemented by the student. The mesh being used for the analysis would be quadrilateral. The final expectation is to compute stress in the structure due to the given loading. The tasks are as follows:
