The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT presents a machine integrated system for testing, calibration and certification of powder jet nozzles and the caustic of their powder jet for laser metal deposition at Control 2018.

Additionally to this standardized characterization, the cladding process is visualized and monitored.

High Speed Laser Metal Deposition

The quality of additive manufactured components and coatings by Laser Metal Deposition is highly dependent on reproducible setups and process stability. Therefore, powder feeding into the melt pool is one key parameter.

For measuring the powder distribution, a laser line illuminates one layer of the jet.

Images of a coaxial camera with the back reflection of the powder particles are used to calculate the caustic of the powder jet.

For the first time, a measuring system enables the characterization of the entire powder gas jet and powder jet nozzles by calculation of figures e.g. position and diameter of powder focus for generating certificates.

The system supports the user during process setup by measuring and marking the position of the processing laser and nozzle exit and marking positions of features of the workpiece, e.g. edges, corners, holes.

Throughout the metal deposition process, the thermal emission of the process and process stability by means of geometric features of the melt-pool are monitored, visualized and documented.
