Fraunhofer ILT and Etxetar sign memorandum of understanding
The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT and Etxetar S.A. have signed a memorandum of understanding, thereby strategically expanding their cooperation. The focus is on the further development and industrialization of laser metal deposition (LMD) and extreme high-speed laser metal deposition (EHLA).
The aim is to combine the research and process competence of Fraunhofer ILT with Etxetar's process industrialization and machine-tool building expertise in order to realize powerful and scalable solutions for industrial implementation. Etxetar brings extensive expertise in designing laser- and machining-based solutions and in commissioning complete turnkey production systems—from laboratory setups to real-world processes—empowering medium- to high-volume producers worldwide. Fraunhofer ILT contributes its proven experience in LMD and its process variants, including EHLA and EHLA3D, which enable thin, high-quality coatings and filigree 3D structures at very high process speeds.
The MoU creates a framework for joint expertise development, the preparation and implementation of public funded projects, and contract research. The collaboration is non-exclusive and leaves room for additional cooperation formats depending on project and market requirements. In addition to already known applications, the focus is specifically on new, high-growth fields, in particular aerospace, space and energy. Here, LMD- and EHLA-based processes offer potential for functionally integrated coatings, repair strategies, and the efficient manufacture of sophisticated components.
"With Etxetar, we have a strong partner at our side with whom we want to systematically bring LMD and EHLA processes to industry. The goal is to improve the transfer over the 'last mile' and to translate research results into concrete plant concepts and various applications," says Dr. Thomas Schopphoven, head of the Laser Material Deposition department at Fraunhofer ILT.
