Fraunhofer ILT at Formnext 2025

From November 18 to 21, 2025, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT will showcase its latest research and industrial applications in Hall 11, Booth D31. This year, we are focusing on three key topics:

At Formnext 2025, Fraunhofer ILT will be demonstrating a W-CuCrZr divertor monoblock chain that illustrates the approach from powder to near-functional component.

SCaRB combines EHLA with rolling in a single step. The result: coated components whose surfaces are significantly improved by plastic deformation during coating.

1. High-Performance Tungsten and Multi-Material Components

For fusion reactors and other extreme environments, additive processes make it possible to join materials like tungsten and copper without critical bonding zones. In the DURABLE project, we demonstrate nearly crack-free, long-lasting components that require minimal post-processing.

2. One-Step Surface Perfection

Our SCaRB process combines Extreme High-Speed Laser Material Deposition (EHLA) and roller burnishing into a single step — creating dense, high-quality surfaces right during deposition. A live demonstrator at our booth will show how this hybrid approach streamlines production.

3. Smart and Functional Structures

Fraunhofer ILT integrates sensors, adjustable porosity, and multi-material coatings (including PEEK alternatives to PFAS) directly into metal parts. The result: intelligent components that can sense, think, and react in demanding environments.

In addition, visitors can explore arepresentative range of applications such as Al-Sc housings for fuel cells, optical mounts for satellites, and adaptive laser beam shaping with a 2 kW LCoS test setup.
