Students of natural sciences and engineering with an interest in laser technology will find an ideal environment at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, the Chair for Laser Technology LLT, the Chair for Technology of Optical Systems TOS and the Nonlinear Dynamics of Laser Manufacturing Processes Instruction and Research Department NLD at RWTH Aachen University to acquire fundamental and practical knowledge.

The word LASER is an acronym for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". It actually represents the principle itself but is also used to describe the source of the laser beam.



“5 to 12”: RWTH Science Night

Science explained clearly, made tangible and lightened up with music, art and culture: On November 8, 2019 there was a lot to discover for anyone interested from 19:00–0:00 in the lecture hall centre C.A.R.L. on Claßenstraße in Aachen.

The chairs for Laser Technology LLT, for Technology of Optical Systems TOS and for Digital Additive Production DAP of RWTH Aachen University show how versatile the tool light can be used.

Femtec Excursion - Summerschoool 2019

Talks, laboratory tours and lectures for MINT enthusiasts: On September 18, 2019, 34 grant students from 9 universities visited the Fraunhofer Institutes ILT and IPT in Aachen as part of the Summer School 2019. In addition to information on entry and career opportunities and a lab tour, the scholarship holders were given the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with scientists.


"Schüleruni Maschinenbau 2019": Research with Lasers

From July 15 to 19, 2019, school students were able to spend a week getting to know research, teaching and university life at RWTH Aachen University.

The research at Fraunhofer ILT also became tangible: The participants spoke with students and researchers and experimented with light.


jDPG Excursion: Experience Laser Technology

On 26.04.2019, 17 physics students visited Fraunhofer ILT during an excursion of the Junge Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (jDPG).

During a guided tour through the laboratories, the students gained insights into the institute's research in the fields of beam source development, EUV technology, laser measurement technology and additive manufacturing with LPBF.


Laser Precision Tools Are Changing the World

As part of the "RWTH Explains the 2018 Nobel Prize" series, Prof. Reinhart Poprawe from the Chair for Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University & Fraunhofer ILT gave a lecture on precision tools made of laser light on December 1, 2018. He explained the developments for which the researchers A. Ashkin, D. Stickland & G. Mourou were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018.


Prof. Loosens Monochromatic Light Orchestra

Light concert at the student event on 28.9.18: Jan Maetschke, Jonas Rachner and Nicole Grubert played the laser harp live at Katschhof, which turns light into music. Simon Herwig from "Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln" accompanied the trio with singing.

The instrument was created as part of a project at the Chair of Optical Systems Technology TOS, RWTH Aachen University.
