Lighting, in general, has seen major technological developments, trends and applications in the last few decades. In automotive technology and mobility, there have been several breakthroughs recently, for example, in sensor technology and OLEDs. They are more energy-efficient, more durable and more versatile than conventional technologies. Overall, lighting plays an important role in various areas of daily life and industry, from residential lighting to workplace lighting and urban lighting.

Modeling of optical systems

Essential prerequisites for autonomous driving are Advanced Driver Assistance (ADA) systems with a large number of sensors and corresponding evaluation algorithms. Depending on the desired functionality and measurement distance, radar and LIDAR systems as well as cameras are already in use today. Fraunhofer ILT is developing an approach that integrates the electromagnetic radiation of light as well as LIDAR and radar distance sensors via a shared transmission and mirror element within the headlamp.

Smart Lighting

Further developments in the field of lighting have helped to improve the safety, aesthetics and functionality of vehicles and are contributing to light playing an increasingly important role in automotive technology and mobility.

Lighting systems are becoming increasingly intelligent as digitalization progresses. Adaptive lighting systems automatically adjust to the driving situation to improve visibility and safety. Car manufacturers use light not only for functional purposes, but also as a design element.

It is no longer enough to simply illuminate the road or light up the driver’s compartment. Light is becoming an integral part of vehicle design, improving safety, enhancing aesthetics and enriching the driving experience.
