Today, the simulation of product characteristics is an integral part of reducing the risk in the product development. Of particular interest is often the analysis of thermal or mechanical load cases with regard to the functional capability of components and products. The coupling of several physical domains is mostly necessary to evaluate the overall behavior of technical systems. For example, laser beam sources are simulated thermally, optically, mechanically and electrically, while in laser material processing properties such as absorption, gas flow, temperature and melt flow are simulated to describe the process.

The technology focus digitalization offers modular simulation solutions in the field of laser technology, solutions that assemble functional components individually for the respective task and enable a coupled solution. The focus is on the reduction of models to the specific application case, which allow the use in the field of fog computing as a link between machine and production environment. Further reduction steps lead to tailored solutions that allow the models to be integrated into manufacturing systems as edge devices with the aim of self-optimization.
